Caregivers

The needs of those with traumatic brain injury, stroke and dementia is complex and challenging. From 2017 - 2022 my daughter, mother, and I had a multigenerational home. My mother suffered from Alzheimer’s, and in absence of a cure for that disease, I strived to maximize her happiness and safety while developing balance for all of us.

Research suggests that the single most important factor to the outcome of those with dementia is the mental health of the primary caregiver. All too often the adult child or spouse of an individual with significant needs takes on the bulk of care. Despite our sense of duty, it is critical to recognize that this inevitably leads to burn out and poor quality of life for both.
